Angus remembers that he and Maybelle had to drive from Margaree through a blizzard to get to the recording date in Sydney. The normal hour and a half drive took them five hours and when they arrived they had to record almost immediately.

Angus found Mrs McGee in the almost legendary Sky Collection, a very influential 19th Century compilation. Tea Gardens was composed by Angus as he was waiting for a bus in front of a Chinese place by that name in Sydney; he wrote down enough of it on the bus going home so that he could remember and sort it out later. It is the only one of Angus' compositions which he himself recorded.

Angus also recorded these tunes at the first session which took place in the middle 1930s. Both tunes are in Coles. During this period of his life, besides devoting much of his energies to music, he also taught school, was a forest warden, and worked for a time in the Arctic.

These two jigs were recorded at Angus' last session (as were the next three tracks) in Sydney in the early fifties. The accompaniment for this session was provided by Angus' niece Maybelle Chisholm (Doyle) on piano and Mickey McIntyre on guitar (all of side one features Bess Sidall MacDonald on piano, and the first two tracks of this side feature Elizabeth Mellett).

This beautiful, utterly unforgettable performance was recorded in Montreal. The first two tunes are Scots pieces. Both Angus' parents were Gaelic speakers. He remembers his mother singing a song in Gaelic to the tune of Bird's Nest, and he learned the tune from her.

Both tunes are in Coles. Fred Wilson's was a popular tune around Margaree (Angus was born in Margaree Forks). This track was recorded in Boston (Roxbury), where Angus also played regularly on the radio. He also played for dances at O'Connell Hall, solo and with Alec Gillis and the Inverness Serenaders.

A grand performance! Miss Lyall was and is quite popular in Scotland and has been more often recorded there. My Brother's Letter is in the MacQuarrie Collection of Cape Breton violin music, and was composed by Vincent MacLellan.

The first tune is a strathspey, a form of reel originating in the area near the Spey river in Scotland. Strathspeys are the most distinctively fiddle music in Scotland and are highly regarded there, and in Cape Breton, for their beauty, both in listening and stepdancing. The second and third tunes are reels that can be found in Scott Skinner's Scottish Violinist.

Angus' unique, highly influential style, distinguished for its gaiety and lightness, shines on this track made during his second recording session which too place in Montreal shortly after his first session. Angus went up there with A.A. Gillis and Dan J. Campbell, well known Inverness County, Cape Breton fiddlers. The jigs are "Thompson's" and "Light and Airy."

These are two American hornpipes from Coles 1001 Fiddle Tunes (originally Ryan's Mammouth Collection published in the 1880s). At the time they were recorded, Angus had a radio program in Sydney, Cape Breton, which went on for several years. Those were the times that he was playing for hundreds of Cape Breton dances, often travelling through blizzards that would have discouraged anyone less dedicated.

Flute solo, John Reynolds - tambourine, Ed Gagan (Geoghegan) - piano, Columbia 33293-F. The first is found in innumerable settings, sometimes in multi-part settings. It is usually heard with Morrison's second and third parts. The universally known Foxhunter's Reel is related to it, as is most apparent in Morrison's fourth part. The second reel seems to be a relative of the Flax in Bloom.

Flute solo, John Reynolds - tambourine, Ed Gagan (Geoghegan) - piano, Columbia 33293-F. The first is an attractive little tune, a bit like a more well-known reel, Miss Johnson. The second tune is called Peggy on the Settle in O'Neill's. The Music of Ireland (1903) has the setting with the run up to high C which Morrison (and his piping student Tom Busby) used, but the Dance Music of Ireland (1907) omitted this variation for some reason.

Flute solo, John Reynolds - tambourine, Ed Geoghegan - piano, Columbia 33247-F. The first tune is the Wonder Hornpipe, a composition in the key of B Flat of Newcastle fiddler James Hill. Like most Irish musicians Morrison resets the tune into G, as flute players and pipers did with other Hill tunes like the High Level and the Scholar. Morrison's rush up the scale at the end of the first part, followed by his very staccato fifing, is a great moment. An admirer of Morrison once said "He'd...

Flute solo, John Reynolds - tambourine, Ed Geoghegan - piano, Columbia 33247-F. The first reel is better known as Ballinsloe Fair, popularized by Michael Coleman. Fiddlers play a bowed triplet on the C natural note of the second part; Morrison simply coughs or tongues a series of four Cs. This isn't a tune often heard form flute players or pipers due to the difficulty of playing a roll on the C, and also of separating the high G from the C on the pipes. To finish things off Morrison plays Miss...

Interestingly enough piper Tom Ennis also recorded a medley of reels which included the last two mentioned tunes, in that order. Morrison was also a piper and would have known Ennis, and possibly also Patsy Touhey, who also played the Bogie in A, unlike the more common E. This is Morrison at his fiercest, note the wild trill he...

Flute solo, John Reynolds - tambourine, Ed Geoghegan - piano, Columbia 33260-F. Another recording of this old polka from Morrison, along with its companion tune which Morrison trills mightily on. The year before Reynolds had made his recorded debut with Morrison, on the reels Dunmore Lassies/Manchester Reel/Castlebar Traveler, and schottisches Sweet Flowers of Milltown/The Boys From Knock. These were sans piano and have been the only sides of Morrison reissued to date.

Flute solo, Ed Geoghegan - piano, New Republic 2332. The trill on the high G and F notes in the first tune is a marvelous device. Morrison follows with the familiar title melody. He would record another disc with the same title in 1928, which recording will also be featured on this site.

Flute solo, Ed Geoghegan - piano, New Republic 2332. The first is a loping version of a tune called Sheehan's in O'Neill's book; piper Liam Walsh recorded it as the Broom reel, and his recording of it may also be heard on this site. Morrison recorded a different reel with the Indian on the Rock title in 1928. The second reel John McKenna called The Flowers of the Red Mill.

Flute solo, Ed Geoghegan - piano, New Republic 2334. A slip jig followed by a double jig, a device also used on 78s by piper Patsy Touhey and Leitrim flutist John McKenna. I've never come across the first tune in print; it is a very nice old fashioned melody, which Morrison uses his full arsenal of techniques on, blending the first and second octaves by slacking his breath, and using double cut rolls on the high G, which was also a favorite technique of Touhey's - Morrison was also a piper, and...

Flute solo, Ed Geoghegan - piano, New Republic 2334. Packie Dolan recorded the first reel as Mullin's Fancy, which is used for his specifically fiddle setting. It is a very common Northumbrian song/tune, the Keel Row; other Irish players call it the Strawberry Blossom. The second one Paddy Killoran recorded as the Pretty Girls of Mayo, but it has gone under innumerable titles/settings as well. Two recordings on this site featuring it are Mullaney's Favorite by Mullaney and Stack, and Liam...

Flute and melodeon, Miss McGoldrick - piano, Gennett 5478. These tunes are better known as the Langstern Pony and the Ship in Full Sail. Conlon dominates the recording, the better to mute Morrison's somewhat out of tune flute. Langstern Pony is sometimes played with two additional parts but most older players stuck to the first two.

Flute and melodeon, Miss McGoldrick - piano, Gennett 5478. Piper Michael Gallagher had recorded this hornpipe a month earlier, and his recording of it may be heard on this site as well. Both of these settings are distinct from that recorded by fiddler James Morrison in the 30s, which has become standard. Conlon plays the tune a few times before Morrison joins in, which is good since Morrison is abysmally out of tune with him.

Flute solo, Miss McGoldrick - piano, Gennett 5477. Miss McGoldrick doubles the melody, presaging Eleanor Kane of Chicago, who recorded a solo piano disc in the 30s and made various recordings with Pat Roche's Shamrock Orchestra. Miss M seems to keep the damper pedal down all through the tune, lending an otherworldly quality to this recording.

Flute, fiddle, and melodeon, Miss McGoldrick - piano, Gennett 5477. Morrison's flute is a bit out of tune and Higgins's fiddle can scarcely be heard over the droning piano; nevertheless this is a lively pair of reels. The C in the Bank of Ireland is usually played as a C Natural but old melodeon players like Conlon didn't have this note on their one row diatonic instruments, so they either played a C sharp or modulated to a relative minor key that had a natural third note of the scale.

Flute duet, unknown - piano, Irish I-3011. These reels are the Galway Rambler and the London Lassies, tunes which have had an innumerable number of titles attached to them. Michael Coleman's student Hughie Gillespie also recorded the Galway Rambler as Paddy Finlay's Fancy. Finley was a piccolo player who made a 78 with Coleman, one side of which may be heard on this site.

Flute duet, unknown - piano, Irish I-3011. A pair of fiery jigs from these Leitrim musicians. Some private recordings of Jack Dolan may be heard at http://www.lafferty.ca/music/irish/flute-geezers/. Both tunes were recorded by John McKenna, the first in duet with James Morrison, the second with Eddie Mehan; Morrison recorded it solo as well.

Flute solo, unknown bass and snare drum, Irish 13016. The first reel is the Traveller. Captain Kelly was a "Gentleman piper" commemorated in a different reel than this one, which resembles the Connaught Reel, a tune recorded on 78 by Galway flute player Tom Morrison.

Flute solo, piano and snare drum - unknown, Irish 13016. This is a medley recorded by flute player John McKenna in 1925, and also recorded in recent times on LPs by McKenna fans Frankie Gavin and Marcas O'Murchu. Higgins was from Ballinomore, Co. Leitrim, where McKenna was and is very much held in respect. These hornpipes are better known as the Minstrel's Fancy and the Greencastle. The bass and drums backing is unique and a very light, pleasant sound. Irish was a subsidiary of a New York...

Fiddle solo, unknown piano player and label. The first tune is a composition of Mayo/Chicago fiddler John McFadden, who supplied the tune for O'Neill's Dance Music of Ireland (1907). It was also recorded in the 30s by the famous Galway band the Ballinakill Traditional Dance Players. The hole for this disc was unfortunately punched slightly off-center, resulting in a wobble which becomes progressively worse as the needle advances.

Fiddle solo, unknown piano player and label. This was recorded while Murphy lived in New York City in the 50s. Ceol Rince na Eireann Vol 5 has a different Mount Collins Reel, transcribed from Murphy's playing. Likewise there are various Doon reels; this tune however is called by its title from O'Neill's, (Jim) Kennedy's Favorite, which was also a favorite of Murphy's; he also recorded the tune on a Gael-Linn 78, which may be heard on the CD Milestone at the Garden. The hole for this disc was...

Fiddle solo, Tom McSharry - piano, Copley 9-115. The first tune is titled after Johnny Gorman, a famous travelling piper from Roscommon who played music with both Michael Coleman and James Morrison. This reel was also recorded by Dublin piper Billy Andrews, who may have learned it directly from Gorman at a Dublin Feis Ceoil, or indirectly from musicians who knew Gorman, as Cronin did. The second tune is often called Anderson's, after another renowned piper, Michael Anderson from Co. Sligo. The...

Fiddle solo, piano - Tom McSharry, Copley 9-114. Seamus Ennis learned the first tune from Cronin's teacher Padraig O'Keefe, and Seamus gave it the title O'Keefe's Plough. The second reel seems like a fiddle tune that passed through the hands of a flautist or piper, the melody has a drive to go beneath middle D but instead plays notes in the upper range of the first octave.

Fiddle solo, H. German - piano, Copley 9-116. The flipside of this is Flax in bloom/The Millstone/The Dairymaid, which is also a James Morrison medley. Coleman received much more attention than Morrison or Killoran, but these two were definitely no slouches as fiddlers, and it was noteworthy of Cronin to honor Morison here instead of recreating one of Coleman's medleys. The third and fourth parts of Rakish Paddy are said to be Coleman's composition, presumably after he recorded the usual first...

The Millstone is also called the College Groves or the New Desmne. The Dairymaid was recorded on a radio disc by Michael Coleman as Rockaway Bound, a very American title for this tune.
